August 29. Key Pittman Wildlife Management Area. Seven in the morning, bull rush thick along the water.
The first two hours were all work. Volunteers cut back bull rush and cleared ground so ducks and geese have open water and room to feed. Then we switched to teaching. Experienced hunters ran demos and took questions from new and young hunters. Sandwiches for lunch.
NDOW manages Key Pittman and partnered on the day. Nick Gulli, Glen Franke and the WHIN crew led the work and the demos. It was one of our biggest volunteer turnouts of the year for a WMA project.
Open water and good habitat bring the birds. A wetland choked with bull rush does not. Keeping Key Pittman healthy pays off for waterfowl and the hunters who follow them every fall.
Work first. Then learn something.
