Out here in Nevada, where water’s as precious as a freezer full of elk steaks, you’ve gotta get creative to give wildlife a fighting chance. That’s where floating islands come in. Built by the crew at WHIN, these man-made marshes are tossed into otherwise lifeless water bodies to give ducks and geese a place to loaf, nest, and raise young. It ain’t glamorous work—cutting, bolting, anchoring—but it’s effective. Just like a well-placed guzzler in the San Antonio desert or a predator control trap line in Alamo, these floating islands are part of a bigger story: everyday people rolling up their sleeves and stepping in where habitat’s gone missing. Because out here, if you want wild things to stick around, sometimes you gotta build the wild yourself.
